this is Kristopher - "gettin' a raising"

my place to share the adventures, the ups and downs, and, of course, the incredible joys that i've experienced with parenting Kristopher over the years. i've decided to call it "raising Kristopher" because, as we southerners say, "all children need these days is a good raising.”

basketball camp- WOOO HOOO!

ok. i'm really NOT that excited that Kristopher leaves for basketball camp this weekend and i get almost a week of much needed FREEDOM. as a matter of fact, i am quite the opposite after last year's camp. what happened last year you ask? Kristopher left for camp on a saturday morning. bright and early while the birds were still chirping. i zoomed back home thinking that i would get a little rest before embarking on a week of doing what i wanted to do. the rest of the day was a blur because i was so giddy about being "free." ha.
well, here's what i remember of it.

sunday evening. 7 pm. phone rings. the caller id says Rowan Memorial Hospital. i say to myself: "what the hell?"
me: "hello?"

Kristopher: "ma, the trainer thinks it's broken."

me: "WHAT???!! what's broken? why don't you start at the beginning?"

him: "ok. i fell and the coach brought me to the hospital."

me: "fell when? how? you JUST got there YESTERDAY! and what did you break?"
(oh great. this was JUNE '07 and this adds another broken bone to his resume'. he had already broken his nose a week before thanksgiving '06 doing just this- playing basketball.)

him: "ma. i broke my wrist. would you like to speak to coach?"

me (thinking that i am going to have to drive all the way down to rowan county and get him on the SECOND day of camp! what the hell? what about my plans for doing what i want for the week? what about my no cooking; no laundry; no driving here and there; no getting up early; no fussing week that i had planned?????): "yes, put the coach on the phone."

coach: "hello mrs. kristopher's mom. how are you?"

me (what is HE smoking that he is asking how i am doing when he has my one and only child in an emergency room 3 hours away??): "i'm doing better than kristopher apparently. what's going on?"

coach: "well, he fell during some early drills. we heard it pop and he couldn't move his hand. right now it is swollen and we are here in the emergency room waiting to be seen."

me (about to faint just hearing about the break. i start getting my keys and purse while still on the phone): "ok, well i am on my way right now. do i need to speak with a doctor before i get there?"

coach: "well, i don't think you need to come down here at all. ah, he said that he would like to stay through the rest of the camp."

me: "what do you mean stay? what's he going to do with a broken arm? cheer lead?"

coach: "well, we've discussed it and he can help with the balls and the towels and things like that. he will still learn the drills and be a part of the team so you can leave him if you'd like."

me (thinking i paid for him to be the towel boy??? but since i've paid for camp he may as well stay - even if he has to learn cheers): "well, just have him call me when the doctor has seen him and i can make a decision then."

coach: "ok. i will do. here is Kristopher again."

kristopher: "ma, i want to stay with the team."

me: "we shall see. i will need to hear what the dr. has to say."

him: "ok."

needless to say, i sat down and waited for the dr to call back. when he did, he confirmed what the trainer had said: Kristopher's wrist was broken in 2 places and would need a cast when he got back to the area. he (the dr. there in the emergency room) would put a soft cast on it, wrap it in a sling and Kristopher could go back to camp.

so i let him go back to camp. yes, he stayed through the week.

(as you can see- the wrist was wrapped in a fashionable (although extremely HOT) black cast for the remainder of the summer)
